Green Mermaid Resource Guide

Our commitment to the environment is visible in all aspects of our business from our local vendors to our grounds composting program.   Use the following resources to find out more about how the Mermaid Café works to be a part of a sustainable, healthy planet.

All of our to-go cups are biodegradable and compostable.  Our cold cups are made from corn plastic.

We save our coffee grounds, tea and filters for composting.  Stop by to find out how you can get some of our grounds for free. Coffee grounds are high in nitrogen and can be treated like grass clippings for composting.

We use recycled glass bottles for our juice and iced beverages.

We shop, love, and support our local producers by using the Dane County Farmer’s Market to supplement our cheese and Driftless Organics produce.

We buy local because we are local.  See our MERFAMILY section for details about our different local vendors:  NessAlla Kombucha, Just Coffee, Simple Soyman, Sassy Cow, Driftless Organics, Jordandal, and New Century Farm.

The Mermaid Café believes in small-scale agriculture like Sassy Cow,  Driftless Organics, Jordandal and New  Century Farm.  That’s why we support organizations like the Family Farm Defenders. www.familyfarmdefenders.org

We believe in Fair Trade. Small-scale farmers everywhere deserve a living wage for their hard work. And they deserve it all of the time, not just some of the time.  That’s why we purchase only Fair Trade coffee from Just Coffee and Fair Trade Teas and Vanilla from Frontier Cooperative.
